John

John the “beloved disciple” (John 13:23) was a son of Zebedee and was probably also the younger brother of James. John, along with Peter and James, were often said to have been with Jesus on many important occasions (for example, in the Garden of Gethsemene in the opening scene of The Passion of the Christ – Mark 14:32-33). On the cross close to death, Jesus entrusted his mother to the care of John (John 19:26-27). John later became one of the leaders of the Christian community in Jerusalem. Irenaeus reports that he lived into old age and wrote his gospel later in life in Ephesus. John is traditionally viewed as the author of the gospel bearing his name, and the author of the Apocalypse or The Revelation of Jesus Christ.

In Mel Gibson’s film The Passion of the Christ, John is often present within various scenes but is given no lines of dialogue. Gibson’s movie emerges out of the gospel tradition where he is often seen as the disciple of love and a close friend of Jesus. John is often associated with the contemplative life.
