Malchus
Malchus was a servant of the High Priest Caiaphas and a member of the party which arrested Jesus in the opening scene in the garden of Gethsemene. Malchus is identified by name only in the gospel of John. Peter, in an act of resistance against the soldiers come to arrest Christ, cut off Malchus’ right ear (John 18:10). Peter is reprimanded by Christ and told to put away his sword. Luke’s gospel notes that Jesus healed Malchus’s ear. The gospels speak no more of Malchus but it is fair to assume that his encounter with Christ must have left a lasting impression upon him. Jesus’ healing of Malchus, even in the midst being arrested, radically demonstrated the principle he himself taught: “Love your enemies, do good to those that hate you.”
