Charles Stanley, the acclaimed theologian, stated, “His [Jesus’] voice leads us not into timid discipleship but into bold witness.”

When I think of the term, "discipleship," I immediately think of my friend and mentor, Pastor Eugene Burgess. A godly and courageous follower of Jesus Christ, Eugene is the “real deal.” He loves radically, obeys God’s commands, and consistently teaches the Word of God. He encourages others, sincerely listens, boldly speaks truth, and is a fervent prayer warrior. Pastor Burgess is sold out for God and is willing to go wherever God sends him. His life is a reflection of Christ that honors God that inspires others to follow the Lord while giving them grace, hope, faith, and an abundance of love.

Men like him encourage me to finish this faith journey well, (2 Timothy 4:7) and to consistently look for eternal life and its rewards more than earthly ones (Colossians 3:24). Denying myself is no longer a negative, but an exciting trek into faith.

Bold witnessing takes an act of special courage that comes from the Holy Spirit's prompting and is always looking outward, being pulled forward by God’s purposes and plans. It is reaching beyond ourselves and putting God’s will first.

Will you join me in this adventure of being sold out for Christ that is anything but timid? It requires a special boldness, but many have taken up the challenge and followed. The Holy Spirit will guide you, strengthen you and inspire you as you step out in faith, just as he has Pastor Burgess and many others.

Dear Lord, I pray for the courage and strength to boldly represent you in this world. Please help me to be your disciple and to be a light in this world. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Go Deeper — Who influences and encourages you to follow Jesus? Will you make an effort today to tell them that they do and also pray for them? Then invite the Holy Spirit to enable you be more like them and seek opportunities today to boldly talk to others about Jesus in his strength.
