“You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house.”  Matthew 5.14-15 (NLT)

Kmart was famous back when I was growing up for their “Blue Light Specials” (unadvertised specials in the store). Someone on the loud speaker would say, “Welcome Kmart shoppers! We have a Blue Light Special in aisle four. We have just marked down tennis racquets from $20.99 to $15.99. This will only be for the next half hour, so hurry and stop on by to get yours.”

“Blue Light Specials” were designed to get people’s attention. They drew people to them, even when they weren’t really interested in the product.

Jesus, in Matthew 5.14-15 is essentially saying, “You are My Blue Light Special! You should stand out from the crowd. As followers of me, you’re to be different! This light within you should radiate to those around you and draw them like a moth to a flame.”

When we love unreservedly, forgive quickly, are peace-filled in the midst of difficult circumstances, give without expecting anything in return, this marks us as different. It’s as if we’re standing in aisle four proclaiming, “We’ve got a deal of a lifetime, and you’re not going to want to miss out! This deal has transformed my life and it can change yours, too!”

So let me ask you, are you keeping this “deal” to yourself? Are you using the excuse that you can’t express yourself well? Don’t have Bible school training? Are you leaving it up to others to be the Light?

We have a “deal” of a lifetime. Let’s not keep it to ourselves!

Dear Jesus, we confess our reservation to share You with those around us. Give us the faith to trust You, the boldness share You, and the urgency to not hold back from where You call us go. Amen.

Take Action

Share your story of what Jesus has done in your life with someone. Pray for God to open doors for you to share, and then boldly step through them.
