“But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.” 1 Peter 2:9

As Christians we talk a lot about how much Jesus loves us. And He does! More than we could ever grasp. We talk about how He knows us, forgives us, and has a perfect plan for each of our lives. We are indeed “a chosen people” and “God’s special possession” but I think we often forget what that actually means.

As a community in His own right, our triune God is entirely self-sufficient, the very image of perfection and love. When we enter into relationship with Him, we are welcomed into the reality of that love. We follow Jesus Christ, under the directing hand of God the Father, and are filled with the Holy Spirit.

We are called out of the darkness of sin and ignorance and into the light of truth: but it is not enough to stand still and proud in that light. We are called to live actively in the light, declaring the praises of the One who provides it.

What would it mean to really live as the ambassador of a holy nation? Don’t our most prized possessions speak loudly of who we are as people? Why don’t we, as God’s special possessions, speak loudly of His identity?

There are so many people in the world who are living in the lonely darkness, who long for community and meaning: the very things we can rejoice in because of God’s love for us. Where would you be if no one had shared that light with you?

Lord Jesus, thank You for choosing me. Thank You for the love, forgiveness, grace, and LIFE that You offer me. I want to truly live in Your light, as an ambassador of Your kingdom. Give me courage to share You with others the way someone once shared You with me. I love You and want to declare Your praises forever. In Your name, amen.
