The door of death awaits us all. When this door opens, it is often without warning. It ushers us into eternity, then closes securely behind us, never allowing us re-entry into this world again.

We’re not alarmed when old people die. But when others leave this world early, it causes us to think about things we may not want to face. We may fear death because we don’t know what awaits us on the other side.

The instrument that ushered in Jesus through the death door — the cross he was crucified on — is now a sign of hope. This is where the judgement took place for our sins. He was the only one who came back alive through the door — to prove that he was God himself, and that all that he said was true.

Our Lord said he is the author and finisher of the faith we have in him (Hebrews12:1-2). The work he began in us, he promises to finish until the day he comes for us (Philippians 1:6).

Grasp my hand, fellow pilgrim, as we walk together toward that door. The road is not to be traveled alone. We have his spirit in us to guide us and enable us to remain steadfast throughout the journey. Don’t look back. We are closer to the end than when we first believed. What lies behind the door is victory, not defeat.

Lord Jesus, thank you for coming to this world, knowing there was a door of death that awaited you. Help us to look ahead with hope in you and not fear death. Guide us in finding our purpose in you along the way. Amen.

Go Deeper — Look for fellow pilgrims that share the same path. Remind each other of the one who placed you on the journey together and rejoice in what lies ahead at the end.
