I was homesick and anxious that night at my grandparents’ house, over 400 miles from home. It was at that time, around the age of twelve, that my anxiety started. As I finally settled down that night, I remembered the Scripture verse my PawPaw had shared with me, about the woman who touched Jesus' robe. In my spirit, I heard the words that Jesus spoke to her: “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace”.

I have thought of that woman often, thinking that she must’ve had so much more faith than I do, to be healed instantaneously. I have reached out to Jesus many times, but, twenty-five years after that night, I still struggle with anxiety.

When I feel this way though, I remember the words of Apostle Paul in 2 Corinthians 12:9: “But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.” Just as the woman had faith for Jesus to heal her, Paul had faith for Jesus to heal him. But instantaneous healing did not come for Paul. Instead, God taught him to grow in the midst of weakness.

So was I or wasn’t I healed that night? For the moment, I was. And day by day, I am still healing. The more I experience God working in me in the midst of my anxiety, the more I am convinced that part of becoming holy is becoming whole. And that wholeness takes patience and trust. It is often a process.

We don’t know what happened to that woman after Jesus healed her. She definitely experienced an instantaneous miracle. But did she walk with him in continued wholeness and healing? I hope so.

Dear Jesus, thank you for healing me. From the inside out. Not just today, but every day of my life. Help me continue to trust you for this healing and extend that healing to my interactions with others. In Jesus’ name, amen.
