“The Spirit of the Lord God is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound.” Isaiah 61:1

Mariah, a young friend of mine, texted me to tell me how bad her day was. I sensed I needed to call her. I could tell she was driving, but she wouldn’t say where. The Lord gave me a sense that she was planning to end her life. I wanted to keep her talking, so I listened. I prayed. I loved. Eventually, the car stopped and I heard her walking. Then finally, she got back into the car and drove home. She knew that she was loved and escaped the dark grip of despair. For reasons I will never know, God entrusted her to me that afternoon.

The Spirit entrusts us with discernment and opportunities. He nudges us to pray and to call someone or do something so that His power and presence can be revealed. At times, He asks us to be a conduit of His power to bring freedom to captives. It may seem underwhelming but you just may well be saving a life!

More importantly, God wants us to pray. He has anointed us and entrusted us with those He wants to rescue and minister to. The more in tune we are with the Holy Spirit, the more of His work He is able to do through us.

Lord, show me what you want me to pray for. Nudge me, and help me realize that you are speaking to me. Move me towards the action you have anointed me for. I may not see the result of these prayers, but let me rest in knowing that I was obedient to what you’ve asked of me.

Take Action

When you sense the Spirit telling you to pray for someone, pray for them! Make a note of the names of people you’ve been praying for. You may be amazed when you learn that in that very moment, God used you to change a life!
