"The life of mortals is like grass, they flourish like a flower of the field; the wind blows over it and it is gone, and its place remembers it no more. But from everlasting to everlasting the Lord’s love is with those who fear him, and his righteousness with their children’s children—with those who keep his covenant and remember to obey his precepts.” Psalm 103:15-18

The longer I live, the shorter I know life is! This seems paradoxical, especially to those still in their twenties and thirties, but when you labor over the crest of the hill and begin to look down the long slope toward the end, you start to wonder where it all went.

As a young man I saw All My Road Before Me (the title of C. S. Lewis’s youthful diary). All things seemed possible. Now in my fifties, I find myself pondering a shortening list of things I’d still like to accomplish. We are all indeed “like grass … like a flower of the field; the wind blows over it and it is gone, and its place remembers it no more.” (Psalm 103:15-16)

Yet the very next verse gives us a glimpse of what Jesus won for us: “But from everlasting to everlasting the Lord’s love is with those who fear him ….”

Everlasting to everlasting—now that sounds like a long time! How much more does God love us than the flowers and blades of grass? We were made to be with Him, fear Him, and love Him for eternity.

So, as Spring returns and the grass shoots forth, contemplate the One who conquered sin and death by dying on the cross and coming forth from the tomb. This Easter, remember that He did it for you! For grass that would last. As the Psalmist reminds us, “His steadfast love endures forever.” (Psalm 136:1)

Father God, You call us grass – and we are – but You sent Your precious, only Son to die and rise again for these blades of grass. Because You knew we were more than grass – that the perishable was made to take on the imperishable! Father, Lord Jesus, Holy Spirit, thank You for loving us, redeeming us, and sealing us for eternity. Amen.
