Jesus said these words to His friend Martha as she was grieving the death of her brother Lazarus. Clearly, she thought the power of Jesus to heal was only for the living, and now it was too late. Lazarus’ death was final. For Martha, the promise of the resurrection was a far away hope. Compassionately, Jesus reached out to Martha—and to us.

“I am the resurrection and the life.”

There is resurrection power in us when we trust in Jesus. Every human being will die. But when we place our trust in Jesus He gives us eternal life and that changes everything.

Death has no power over us through Jesus. Victory over death is our present reality with Jesus. It’s never too late for us when we call out to Jesus. What happens at death is that we live on eternally with Jesus. Because Jesus lives, we live.

When we believe in Jesus our mistakes are not the final word on who we are. Our sins do not define us. Our losses do not limit us.

Jesus asked Martha the essential question of life: “Do you believe this?” What’s your answer?

Today, you can speak Martha’s reply as your own answer and prayer:

“Yes, Lord, I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, who is come into the world” (John 11:27). Teach me how to live as one who believes. Amen.

Take Action

Throughout your day, if doubts and fears enter your thoughts, speak Jesus’ words, ”I am the resurrection and life. The one who believes in me will live.” Turn your thoughts toward the resurrection of Christ; picture the empty tomb that symbolizes your freedom.
