He came to earth in an unusual way. Born of a virgin you say? Come now, who would believe it? Even Joseph, Mary’s betrothed, didn’t, until an angel from heaven told him it was so.

He came on a day like any other and no one took notice. A mighty angelic host filled the evening sky declaring the Holy One of God was here, but only the shepherds heard. Such a mysterious and odd way for God to visit us. Why not a grand entrance to prove his existence? But this pleased him, “for without faith it is impossible to please God.” (Hebrews 11:6)

When he told them who he was and where he came from, they couldn’t believe God would look like this. Neither did they believe God would talk like this.

Then those he created closed their ears and crucified him. They shook their heads saying, “if you’re really him, come down from the cross and we will believe!” (Matthew 27:42)

He left his throne in heaven for sinners that day and they missed his entrance through the womb of a virgin. Truly had I been there, I wouldn’t have believed it either. I would have closed my ears and shook my head too.

Christian friend, he didn’t come down from the cross that day and I’m so glad. He left his kingdom to die in our place. Who would believe it? Could you believe it?

Emmanuel, Emmanuel, God with us. How could we miss such a day? The day God left his throne because of how much he loved the world.

Lord Jesus, you left a glorious throne where you were worshipped and praised in heaven. You were rich and became poor, so that we who were poor would become rich. We bless your name with all believers in heaven and on earth together with all the angels.

Additional Resource: Some atheists and Muslims believe that Jesus dying on the cross for our sins is unjust and immoral. But think about the alternative: Do you really want to be judged on everything you do? Read more of "Is Jesus dying for your sins unjust and immoral?"
