I cannot imagine the pain of rearing children who rebel against me or forget me. But I have friends who are living that experience. It pierces them to the very core of their being.

As Isaiah begins his prophecy, he invites the whole universe to consider the folly of the people of Israel, who have deeply dishonored their all-powerful heavenly Father. God brought them out of Egypt, established them in a land flowing with milk and honey, and provided them with countless blessings. He faithfully sent them prophets to call them back to Himself every time they strayed from His ways.

Yet time and again, they turned their backs on the One who provided all they needed for life and godliness. Instead, they sought out worthless idols. By behaving in this senseless manner, they proved themselves less intelligent than the beasts of burden that remain as close as they can to their master.

Before we chastise them for their folly, let us consider our own treatment of our heavenly Father, who has given us all we need for life and godliness in Christ. Do we seek to honor Him in all we do? Are we obedient children who find delight in living in His presence and accomplishing His will throughout the day?

Or do we choose to rebel, thinking our “idols” will satisfy us more than He will? If so, let us repent and return wholeheartedly to Him, for this Father always runs to welcome His prodigal children when they return to Him.

Almighty Father, thank you for providing me with all I need, just as you did for Israel. Thank you for calling me your child and inviting me to live for your glory. Thank you also for sending Jesus to wash away all my sin and all my shame, and to reconcile me to you. Today, I want to be an obedient child who honors you in all I do. Come fill me with your Spirit and direct my thoughts, my actions, and my words throughout this day. May I not be foolish, but wise! Amen.
