We probably all know people who seem to be successful no matter what they do. Is it due to hard work, talent or God-given ability? Or is there another, lesser-known key to success?

For instance, a 2019 study at Indiana University Bloomington by Y. Joel Young and colleagues showed that people who encourage others reap benefits for themselves and for the community around them. (Link attached below)

I think we can all agree that it is pleasant to be around encouraging people. But this study, as well as others, tells us that encouragement can have a bigger impact than just evoking positive feelings. Encouragers are likely to be more successful financially and relationally.

Maybe the apostle Paul understood the impact encouragement had on the ministry of Christ. There are times in Scripture when Paul encourages believers, (Acts 20:1,2) or tells the church to encourage others (1 Thess 4:18, 5:11, Hebrews 3:13)

We can only imagine how difficult it was to be a Christ-follower in the first century. Encouragement from Paul and other apostles was quite impactful in a time when it was dangerous to be a Christian.

Maybe encouragement from Paul kept some of them going, striving and advancing the Kingdom in the Spirit’s strength. After all, their message changed the world.

Maybe you, like Paul, could encourage others today to follow the path God has put them on, regardless of the obstacles.

Lord, help me find encouragement every day and share it with someone else.

Throughout This Day: Seek to encourage each person you meet.
