We finally had the chance to go on a family vacation. It was absolutely what my body and soul needed. It was refreshing to say the least and I also had time to reflect on things I saw and experienced. One observation struck a chord with me as a parent, and left me considering the great responsibilities we have for our children’s spiritual wellbeing. I saw two separate families having fun, but in both cases, one of the parents was drinking beer in front of their children. Of course, this may appear to be a minor issue, but keep in mind that it only takes one spark to start a forest fire.

While I saw only that moment in time in the lives of each family, I pondered the effects of drunkenness on children and families. We can easily fall into seductive thoughts like these: “My activities have no effect on anyone; after all, I am an adult who deserves to enjoy life.” How quickly we can forget that parents or guardians are the primary authority figures in their children's life.

God gave commandments to the people of Israel that were not to be taken lightly. He promised blessings to those who observed them. He also gave parents and guardians the obligation of passing on these principles to future generations. How is it possible to teach our children to obey the Lord, if we do not take care that our own conduct is above reproach? Parents’ actions, words and attitudes have a significant impact on how our children will behave in society. As stewards, let us do our share with diligence. The Bible is replete with life lessons and our mandate is to imprint God's word on our loved ones and make it a daily reality in our homes.

Dear Lord, forgive me for times I have failed to shepherd my children and those you have brought my way, and help me by your Holy Spirit to be vigilant in impressing God's message on those you have entrusted to me. Amen.

Throughout the Day: If you are a parent, plan time for family devotions. Determine to be consistent in educating and nurturing your family in God's ways. Invite the Holy Spirit to be your helper, guide, and teacher. If you do not have children in your home, pray for Christian families you know.
