It was a beautiful day. My plan was to spend time cycling. Crossing a bridge, I hit broken glass; instantly I had a flat tire. I replaced the tube and off I went. Fifteen minutes, another flat! I must have done something wrong with the first tube; my friend gave me his spare. About 30 minutes later, a third flat. Frustrated, I phoned my wife for a ride home.

At home, I realized each tube had a puncture in the same spot! With close examination, I discovered the problem was the tire had been slit by the glass not just the tube. Pressure pushed each tube through the slit resulting in a new blow out. No matter how many tubes I replaced, pressure would always have the same result. I had been dealing with the symptom, not the cause.

Years ago, I read the line: “We are all like tubes of toothpaste, apply pressure and you will find out what is inside.” When reactions happen over and over, perhaps there is a root cause. The author of Hebrews identifies the potential impact of bitterness on one’s attempts to live peaceably with others.  It can also cause us to fall short of God’s grace and being holy. Some examples of common root issues that can destroy peace and lives: The root of unforgiveness can lead to anger and bitterness. Unresolved hurt and emotional scars can lead to fear and deep insecurity. Just as close examination led to the cause of three flats, examination guided by God’s Spirit can lead to new encounters with grace and healing.

Father, give me eyes to see what is below the surface in my life. Help me identify any root that needs your touch of grace, forgiveness and healing. As I experience your grace, may I extend grace to those around me. Amen.

Throughout this Day: Reflect on what comes out when pressure is applied to your life. Is there a root that needs God’s loving touch?
