Do you ever wonder what God is thinking as He watches us in our daily struggles and situations? As I read through 1 Samuel, I am amazed at Saul’s behavior. Even though the Holy Spirit came upon him earlier in his life as Israel’s king, he wasn’t willing to obey the words of God through the prophet Samuel. When the Philistine army mustered, (13:5) the men of Israel…lost their nerve entirely (13:6).

Saul took matters into his own hands instead of waiting for Samuel. Samuel told him, “You have disobeyed the command of the Lord your God… now your dynasty must end, for the Lord has sought out a man after his own heart (verses 13-14). Instead of enduring and obeying God’s commands, he did his own thing and it cost him his kingdom.

How often do you grow tired of waiting for God to act, and instead of praying and giving thanks, you try to fix it yourself? God has asked us to persevere, to endure, to wait upon Him, always remembering who He is and the promises He has given us. Regardless of the circumstances, we are told to rejoice, to give thanks, to trust and obey.

Saul rationalized his behaviour to Samuel but God still called him to account for his actions. Do not grow tired of waiting for Him to act. Instead trust that He is already at work and will do all He has promised to do in your life and the lives of your loved ones.

Dear Heavenly Father, help me to trust you, regardless of the situation I am facing today. Give me patience to wait on you as you have told me, to be obedient to your Word, and to remember always that you are still in control and I can trust you to do exactly what you promised to do. Amen.
