It was early morning, and I was the only one in Pharaoh Senferu’s burial chamber. Millions of tons of rock were piled above me. The only way out was through a cramped, steep tunnel the length of a football field.

Only one person knew where I was — a taxi driver in the parking lot above, and he didn’t speak a word of English. He’d just pointed to a small opening halfway up the massive pyramid. So off I went. But now, what if something happened to me down here? Would he have cared? Or would he have just driven back to Cairo? My palms still sweat as I recall how I felt!

At that moment, in near darkness and with my panic rising, God spoke to me. “I know where you are, Guy, anywhere on earth you go. You are never alone. I am with you.” The message was unmistakable. My fear subsided. I prayed for a long while in that ancient space with great peace. When I crawled up the tunnel into the light and heat of the Egyptian sun, the taxi driver was waiting.

Amazing! At work, at home, on a surgical table, or even in the depth of an Egyptian pyramid, you are never alone. The Spirit of God knows where you are. You are never beyond his reach. Never away from His care. You are never lost to Him!

Take the “wings of the morning” as far as you like. Jesus said it best, “I am with you” (Matthew 28:20).

Dear God, your Spirit is with me now as I pray, and you care for me. I take courage from that and go on to whatever you have for me next. Amen.
