We’ve all experienced it. The lights flicker, the power dies, and we find ourselves thrown into darkness. Is there a flashlight somewhere? I wonder if it has batteries? Candles? “Anyone have a match?”

In a much deeper sense that is what happened to our world. We sinned. Our connection to God’s power was lost. Our world plunged into spiritual darkness, and in that darkness evil multiplied.

The worst part is that this darkness was within. We were, Paul says, “full of darkness.” Dark thoughts. Dark desires. Dark deeds. And had no light anywhere to help us escape.

But then! Jesus! With the power of purity and sacrifice, His brilliance broke into our darkness and “the darkness has not overcome it” (John 1:5).

“I am sending you,” Jesus said to Paul, so that people “may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God that they may receive forgiveness of sins” (Acts 26:18).

As God’s light shines more brightly within us, our darkness increasingly passes away. Eventually, there will be no darkness at all.

Very few of us found God’s light ourselves. Someone helped us find our way to the Light. What a gift to escape the darkness! Live, then, as a child of the light!

There’s our challenge for today. Is there someone in a dark place that you can help toward the light. Maybe you could help today be their first step toward the light.
