Start Strong

Time to get ready. You’re about to share your faith. Does that mean your life needs to be perfect? Should you start by memorizing a long list of verses? Do you need to read a stack of evangelism books? Nope—to all three. Starting strong is about preparing your heart and soul. Remember, it’s not what you know. It’s who.

Get Ready

Read John 15:4-5, Galatians 5:22-25, and Acts 1:8.

Get out a sheet of paper and divide it into two columns. Mark one side “God promises to” and one side, “God asks me to.” Now go back through the verses above. List all the things that God says he will do, and all the things he asks you to do. What’s the most encouraging thing about these two lists? What challenges you the most about them?

1. Practice Spiritual Breathing

Just as you need to constantly breathe physically, you need to breathe spiritually. Practice spiritual breathing to express your reliance on the Holy Spirit throughout your day. When you realize you’ve sinned, or when temptation, stress, or doubt weighs on your mind, you can…

Exhale: Admit your sin to God, making no excuses. Take full responsibility for your mistake and return wholeheartedly to God resolved to resist temptation and obey him in his strength. Let go of any worry, fear, or self-reliance.

Inhale: Trust God to fill you by His Spirit. Receive his hope, confidence, forgiveness, and power to obey.

Pray continually. Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus (1 Thessalonians 5:17-18).

Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives (Galatians 5:25, NLT).

2. Find a Prayer Partner

The disciples didn’t attempt to share the Gospel on their own and you shouldn’t either. It’s a great idea to have the prayer and encouragement of a Christian friend. Can you think of one person in your life that would be willing to support you as you do this challenge? Get in touch with them to ask them to be your prayer partner. If you can’t think of someone, one of our mentors would be happy to help.
